| Born
in 1954 on the wet and snowy hills of North Vancouver, Craig Mahood
came to sculpture by living a tactile life among the forests and
beaches of the west coast. Carving poles and building driftwood
structures on the shores of the Pacific Ocean opened his mind to the
wonder and beauty of nature. Hours spent in the wood shop, metal shop,
and foundry at the Vancouver School of Art honed his skills and ideas.
Through jobs in construction in the world of steel and concrete in the
towers of downtown Vancouver, he built an understanding of how the
world of dirt and stone is transformed into a controlled environment
that plays at being the place for humans to live. Using environments
that are taken for granted and confronting human desires that are so
often hidden, he pays homage to the art of living and dying in the
physical world. Craig Mahood comes at sculpture from a many-faceted
outlook, as he plays with how humans connect with their physical
surroundings. |
